Bruny News: Issue 491 | February 2022
In September 2021 I was hired as a graphic design consultant to refresh Bruny News, a community-run monthly publication covering the latest news, events and initiatives taking place on lunawuni / Bruny Island. After meeting and workshopping with the team, we established that the refreshed publication should cater to both residents and visitors to the island, the content should be clear and easy to read, and the cover should be eye-catching and enticing.

In the refreshed design, the cover features a photo submitted by a resident or visitor, a publication summary and three highlights from the current issue. The theme colour changes every month to match a colour from the featured image, to help differentiate the issues.
Internally, the template follows a 2-column format, using Roboto for headings and Open Sans for body text to improve overall readability and modernise the look. As most pages in the publication are printed in black and white, the text varies from mid grey to black to separate the information. Under each heading the name of the author and a brief description are included to introduce the contributors to readers. The scope of the publication has been expanded to include local business and resident profiles to help foster engagement among the community.
The InDesign template was designed specifically to be user-friendly and easy to edit for current and future contributors.

In addition to the refresh, I assemble the monthly layouts, contribute a colouring in page and designed the illustrated island map as pictured on the back of the publication.
